A Story About A Team Of Softball
Welcome freshman to Central High School Home of the Cobblers! You are about to enter one of the best softball schools around! All you got to know is how to hit a ball and you’re pretty much in! How is easy is this? It’s pretty much an easy A to graduate this so lovely of a great school. We have the three finest players in softball history for high school league. I don’t know if you haven’t heard of them but I am almost positive you have. We have the best catcher Amanda Hurley, the best third basemen Brittany Ronning and the best Short Stop Jenny Herrera. They all made it to the All-Star Softball High School Team and placed 2nd for nationals, Japan took first.
Saige a new freshman is very excited to know that the three best fielders in the high school league are playing at this very school. She doesn’t know what to think! The coach comes up to Saige asking what position she plays the most. She says i’m the best darn pitcher in the state of South Dakota! “Well than young lady you got to defeat Sara Keester she is the best pitcher in the U.S!” Coach replied. Saige says, “Coach I know everything about that girl, all the ins and outs of all her pitches, I can beat her, my dad says, I got talent like no other kid out here.” “Well if you really want to beat her you’re going to be practicing like you have never practiced before. Just make sure you keep up your grades and you’ll be sure to be on varsity. I got the best team out here and nobody is going to mess it up. Let’s us see what you got kid.” The Coach replies. Saige throws a few pitches, the coach is very impressed by them he just can’t believe a girl her size can throw that well! After the coach gets done watching her he walks up to her and says “Congratulations you just made varsity team! And for a freshman that is very unlikely but you just made it to the top four, your catcher is now Amanda Hurley they call her Hurley don’t ever call her Amanda she might cream you so you shall be careful around her. She’s a feisty one. Anyways let’s go meet the kids in their dorm rooms.”
They walk to the dorm room and they go to room b204 and that’s Hurley’s room. The coach says well Hurley, this is your new roommate she will be our pitcher this year and I figured it would be nice for you two to get acquainted this year. Hurley says “Coach I don’t know about this idea I mean she’s a stupid freshman with blonde hair!” Hurley you need to get acquainted with our new pitcher she will be playing on varsity and you need to get used to that and by that kid get over it you’re not the boss of this team. You will be catching her whether you like it or not!” Brittany and Jenny heard all the ruckus so they come down to Hurley’s room and check out what’s all going down. Hurley and the Coach are yelling and says she will not share a room with a stupid freshman. Brittany and Jenny talk to Hurley and tell her that she should just deal with it. Were all best friends we can figure out away for you two to get along it can’t be that hard for you to deal with a freshman. Hurley says decides yes to the idea and deals with all the agony she has to deal with of a freshman in her senior dorm room.
The next morning at five a.m. they get up for softball practice they practice for five hours. Hurley and Saige are throwing pitches after pitches and then get into a very big verbal fight. Saige and Hurley are suspended from two games because of this action they made. The Coach is yelling at them to stop fighting because they have the biggest tournament that they haven’t lost in three years! Hurley and Saige hug and get over their fight but they can’t play which isn’t good because they are both starters for the team.
Around six p.m. its dinner time. Time to eat some good grub! The team decides to go to pizza hut. They chill there and talk about the big tournament that they’re expected to win. Hurley and Jenny are throwing their pizza around trying to start a pizza fight but somehow they just ended up getting kicked out. So Saige and Brittany are talking, I guess you could say, they are becoming really good friends. Saige asks Brittany why Hurley is so hard to get along with. Brittany says “Its because she has a hard time letting in other people so she acts tough like always deep down inside she wants to be your friend, but she won’t because of the way you look. Maybe if you had a little bit more fat on you and a little less blonde, she might like you. As you can tell me and Jenny don’t have blonde hair and we got fat on us and well muscle of course.” So you’re saying I need to get a different hair color and eat more? Yes that is exactly what I am saying to you kid. “Oh ok I got it now, so really all I really got to do is just look different and she’ll like me!” Saige exclaimed. Brittany says “Good job”
Saige walks to her room where Hurley is laying down. “Well look who just happened to walk in.” Hurley said to Saige. “Ya it’s me Saige, get over it kid.” “Wait you just called me kid! Nobody calls me kid!” Hurley yelled in fury. “How come you call everybody else kid but yet, you get mad that you get called kid?” Saige exclaimed. “I call everybody kid only because I can, I’m the big dog here and nobody can over rule me until after this year. You know what I don’t even like you! You have blonde hair you look like a girl who works on the corner, gosh you know, I might be able to like you if you actually dressed like the rest of us! You’re not even close to looking like a softball player but somehow you’re beyond good! I don’t get that at all!” Hurley yelled out. Saige says. “Ok I got blonde hair I don’t dress like I play sports but hey everybody is getting along with me but you. I know your secret, Brittany told me it’s ok to let me in and say hey friend, but yet you won’t let me because I look different.” Well you know what kid I don’t mind that you dress different I don’t mind that you look different from all of us but somehow a freshman took a varsity spot and your already better than Sarah Keester. I’m afraid that nobody will look at me no more, I’m afraid I lost all that attention I got when I was a freshman. Incase you didn’t know I was the only freshman to make it to be a first string catcher and I was proud my parents took advantage of the work they put me through all my life. And it was totally worth it I am going to play professional softball for the U.S.A! Nobody has that yet, but me, I’m already drafted and nobody can do anything to stop it. You know what lets just drop this whole thing and try and be friends.” Hurley says to Saige. “Alright then Hurley we are friends now, but we won’t be good friends yet.” Saige says.
Early next morning before practice starts the Coach comes up to Hurley and Saige and says “Well I see you two are good friends now at least we can practice like a real team and win some games! Anyways girls, we are going to go back into the Nationals as a team instead of All-Stars, so far I hear that the stat is that, we should pretty much dominate the tournament so let’s hurry up and get to practicing, we only got two weeks left!” Alright alright coach were on it. The girls practice hard and long they stay after practice to work on newer and better pitches for Saige to win the games for them. After they get done practicing they head to eat some more grub at pizza hut the best darn place to eat in Rapid City. They order a pepperoni and split the cost of it, so their sharing like friends do. They head to the dorm and go to bed after a hard work of practicing is done.
“Today girls is the last day of practice for us we will practice light for this big tournament tomorrow as you know we got our girls back to play on the field again and as you know they are pretty good friends so they know the ins and outs of each other. Hurley knows Saige’s pitches pretty darn good and I think we have a really good shot of beating Japan so lets get on the field and practice light and hard at the very same time.” Coach says to the team. They get done around ten a.m. and head to bed because it’s pretty early in the morning still enough time to get a little bit of shut eye. Brittany and Jenny bang on Hurley and Saige’s door to wake them up for lunch. Hurley comes running to the door and says “What the heck is going on here! Cant you see I need shut eye I’m tired and want to sleep!” Jenny replies “Gee kid we just want to take you two out for lunch at pizza hut, cant we do that?” Hurley says “Oh yea well um let me get dressed here and I’ll be right out.” Hurley jumps on Saige and says “Get up kid! Were going to lunch and were not buying!” “Sweet I’m right on it!” Saige replies. So they are now eating a pizza hut enjoying their sweet lunch that was for free. Jenny asks “So you two are alright with each other now?” Hurley and Saige both reply “Yes we actually are.” The Coach walks in and sees them eating and says “Hey girls! Guess what our rivals have entered Rapid City!” Japan and Korea both walk in and they have dirty glares at the girls and Hurley stands up and yells “Hey you weird eyes you guys better watch your game because were going to rock this field right out under your feet!” “Ha ha ha ha ha ha you guys are quite the funny ones, incase you didn’t notice we won last year! We won the bragging rights, and this year, were going to shove it in your American hilly billy white faces!” replied the Japanese. Hurley yells back at them “Wow is that all you got? Just so you know I’m the biggest red neck you know and the word “hilly billy” is a total offense to my language. So if I were you I would walk your Japanese butt back to where ever you came from!” Hurley, Brittany, Jenny, and Saige walked away and didn’t go to pizza hut that night. They headed to their dorm room to get a lot of rest for the next morning for the next morning is the big day because it’s for national’s softball to see who is the best softball team in all of the world!
Hurley is the first person to wake up, so she runs to Saige and wakes her up. Then she runs across the hall and pounds on Brittany and Jenny’s room to wake up and get ready for the big game today. Jenny comes running out and asks what the emergency is at seven in the morning. Hurley says “Hurry up man we got to get ready for the big day! We have to eat our good meal and stretch and everything!” “Ok ok were on our way,” replied Jenny.
The team heads to the field to play at the finals, they won all their games for the day and at the end they have to play Japan and that it so far the toughest team. But everybody says that the team from South Dakota has the game since we beat every other team in America. They get ready to play Japan, dirty dirty looks are being spread.
It’s the fourth inning and Hurley is up to bat the score is now 2-3 Japan is in the lead. Saige is at third and Jenny is on second. If Hurley hits this that means they go into international ruling. Hurley hits it to the fence Saige runs home the score is now 3-3. Jenny tries her hardest to run home but she gets out. Now they are back on the field. Saige is pitching to Hurley. A ball is hit to Brittany she throws the girl out! Saige throws the girl another pitch, the ball is a hard line drive but Jenny ends up catching it. Now there are two outs! Next batter is the best hitter in the League of Softball! This girl has hit fifty-two homeruns and only has struck out twice in her whole entire life. One by Sarah Keester and the other strike out was when she was a little girl. Saige is very terrified of this girl she always hits the ball hard and never fails at hitting it. Hurley walks up to Saige and says “Kid you got this don’t worry she hates the outside and low pitches with a slight curveball. All you got to do is keep this up and were going to win this game.” Saige replies “Alright kid I got this, lets win this darn game!” Hurley runs back and the girl runs her shoulder into Hurley as she walks by but the umpire didn’t see that so nothing happened. Saige throws the first ball, its low and fast with a little curve and it’s a strike! Next ball she throws the girl fouls off. Saige is scared now she is breathing heavily. She takes one last step and walks to the mound and breathes in and out. She throws the ball the girl hits a hard line drive right into Saige’s chest. Saige can’t get up, she is not breathing. She has a pulse but she won’t move. Hurley is rushing towards her yelling and hitting her to get up but she won’t move. The paramedics came and they said she won’t make it through the night. Hurley is lost now, she has lost a good friend and doesn’t know what to do now. She has no pitcher now, she has lost the love of the game. The team forfeits the game and Japan wins.
Hurley quit the game of softball she went to the military and became an investigator for the Navy. Brittany went to play for the Olympics she is second string third baseman. Jenny went to be a doctor, she graduated from Harvard. Saige is buried in a grave with a softball from that game where she last pitched. She is also in the Hall of Fame, she will be put next to Hurley’s picture as being the only pitcher in high school league to ever be a freshman to play for varsity and to almost strike out the big girl. Hurley was also in there for being the only catcher to play on varsity for four years straight starting out as only a freshman in high school.
